GEO for Accountants: Getting Found When Clients Ask AI for Advice
More business owners ask ChatGPT for an accountant — concrete GEO strategies including niche authority content, Google reviews, and schema markup ensure your firm gets recommended.
Imagine this: a new business owner types into ChatGPT: "Which accountant in Rotterdam can help with my VAT return?" The AI generates an answer with three to five recommendations. Are you among them?
Probably not. And that's a problem that grows bigger every day.
In our earlier blog about AI and accountants, we discussed how AI is transforming the accounting profession. This article goes a step further: how do you ensure AI search engines recommend your firm to potential clients?
What is GEO and why is it different from SEO?
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. Where SEO focuses on ranking high in Google's search results, GEO is about being mentioned in AI-generated answers.
The difference is fundamental:
| Feature | SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank in search results | Named in AI answers |
| How it works | Keywords + backlinks | Authority + structured data |
| Number of results | 10 per page | 3-5 per answer |
| Competition | All websites | Only authority sources |
| Measurable | Google Analytics | Manual AI testing |
Research from Princeton, Georgia Tech, and the Allen Institute (2024) found that websites with structured data and citable facts receive up to 40% more mentions in AI answers compared to similar websites without them.
Why accountants are particularly vulnerable
The accounting sector has a specific problem: many firms look identical online. Same services, same descriptions, same generic stock photos. AI models therefore have no reason to recommend one firm over another.
Moreover, potential clients' search queries are increasingly specific:
- "Which accountant specializes in e-commerce VAT?"
- "Accountant who works with Xero in the Manchester area"
- "Accountant who helps freelancers with quarterly tax returns"
If your website doesn't answer these specific questions, you don't exist to AI.
5 concrete GEO strategies for accountants
1. Write about your niche expertise
Generic pages like "our services: annual accounts, VAT returns, payroll" are invisible to AI. Instead, write in-depth content about your specializations.
Examples of content AI picks up:
- "VAT returns for online shops: common mistakes and how to avoid them"
- "The flat-rate VAT scheme in 2026: which freelancers benefit?"
- "Switching from QuickBooks to Xero: a practical guide"
- "Payroll for hospitality businesses: what you need to know about tip regulations"
Each page should contain at least 800 words, cite concrete numbers, and have a clear conclusion that AI can quote.
2. Emphasize your local focus
AI models combine expertise with location. When someone asks for "an accountant in Bristol," your website must unambiguously communicate that you operate in Bristol.
Concrete actions:
- Create a page for each region you serve
- Mention specific neighborhoods or business districts
- Describe local regulations or grants that are relevant
- Reference collaborations with local business associations
3. Make your certifications visible
Accountants have something many other sectors lack: verifiable certifications. ACCA, ACA, CIMA, AAT qualifications. AI models value these signals as proof of reliability.
Don't just place them as logos at the bottom of your page. Mention them in text:
"As a chartered accountant with 12 years of experience in e-commerce VAT, we guide over 80 online retailers annually."
That sentence contains everything AI needs: certification, experience, specialization, and scale.
4. Implement ProfessionalService schema markup
Schema markup tells AI models in a structured way who you are and what you do. For accountants, the ProfessionalService schema is most relevant.
Essential fields:
- @type: ProfessionalService
- name: [Firm name]
- description: [Specialization in one sentence]
- areaServed: [Regions]
- hasCredential: [ACCA, ACA, CIMA, AAT]
- priceRange: [Indication]
- aggregateRating: [Google reviews]
- knowsAbout: [Specializations]
This is invisible to visitors but crucial for AI. It takes a developer less than an hour to implement.
5. Build citable content
AI models prefer to cite content that contains facts. Not opinions, but verifiable information.
Content that gets cited:
- Overviews of tax deadlines per year
- Comparisons of accounting software with concrete pricing
- Checklists for specific business types (setting up a limited company, starting as a sole trader)
- Explanations of regulatory changes with practical impact
Content that doesn't get cited:
- "We are a personal and committed firm"
- "Quality is our top priority"
- "Contact us for more information"

What does it deliver?
Suppose 100 potential clients per month ask an AI search engine for an accountant in your area. If you're mentioned in 20% of those answers, that's 20 potential leads per month. No advertising costs. No SEO rat race. Simply because your website offers the right information in the right way.
That number is growing. Gartner predicts that by 2026, 25% of all search queries will go through AI interfaces. For professional services, that percentage is likely higher.
The first step
Start this week with three actions:
- Test yourself: Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity for an accountant in your area. Are you mentioned?
- Choose your niche: Write one in-depth page about your primary specialization.
- Add schema: Implement ProfessionalService markup on your homepage.
No months of work. No big budget. Just the right information, in the right place.
